A quick update, with more details to follow.
Building a pinball machine from the ground up isn't cheap. Between the cabinet, circuit boards, and playfield mechanisms, it's easy to come up towards the multi-thousand-dollar price of a brand new pinball machine from the likes of Stern or Spooky Pinball, depending on what you're trying to build.
Would it be possible for me to gather up all the parts myself? Sure. Would it take a decent amount of time? Most definitely. It's because of that, that I am bringing forth the possibility of crowdsourcing the funds to build this machine in a more timely fashion.
The finer details are still being worked out, but the general premise is as follows:
Various parts (such as pop bumper assemblies, circuit boards, even the cabinet!) will be listed, with a number of slots based on need. Persons interested would "sponsor" as many parts as they would like by making a contribution to cover the cost of getting the part(s). Once the contribution has been made those parts would be ordered, and the sponsor's name will be noted with the part(s).
Now you might be asking yourself, "That's it? That's all I get for my contribution?" To that, I say "Not quite!" Your contribution will also get your name in the credits for the game. While idle, the game will be programmed to display the names of all persons who helped sponsor parts, even lighting up said parts (when possible) to draw some extra attention to what those people made possible. More elaborate credits for higher-cost items, such as the cabinet, may be something in the future, but we'll keep things simple for now.
How the contributions will be collected is still up in the air, as different methods take varying degrees off the top (changing the sponsor "levels" accordingly). Once the platform has been decided, the parts list finalized, and values established, then sponsorships will be opened up.
All that being said, don't ever feel forced to contribute. This is a hobby project, not some huge commercial endeavor, it will roll along at whatever time it rolls along at. The most I can ever ask is that you tell your friends about Mission: Space Cadet, and point them here for a bit of reading material.
Until next time, Space Cadets.
